Dallas Wiens Full Face Transplant Update

Medicine has progressed greatly in the past years. This marks the one-year anniversary of the world’s full face transplant on Dallas Wiens in Spain.
Wiens, who hails from Texas, had all his facial features burned off by a high voltage electrical wire in November 2008. The image of Wiens after the accident was horrifying. There was absolutely no part of his face other than the slit for his mouth that could be identified.
Wiens’ life has regained some normalcy after the full face transplant, as he stated that he chose to get better rather than bitter after the accident.
He now can nearly feel a kiss from his young daughter on his new face. Unfortunately, however, he still cannot see as the doctors were unable to give him new eyes along with the procedure that cost nearly $300,000 dollars.
Weins is a figure of courage, who, in a situation of apparent hopelessness, continued to persevere.
This case also points to the benefits of organ donation, as the procedure would not have been possible without the gifts of others.
Betsy Nable, President of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, rightfully calls organ donation as the most selfless act one human being can do for another.
